World Chess Champion Gaprindahsvili visits Maarif Schools


Nona Gaprindashvili, the first woman to be awarded the title of International Grandmaster by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1978, visited the Maarif Schools in Tbilissi (capital of Georgia).

Five-time World champion during her career, Nona Gaprindashvili has won 25 medals since 1961; she notably won 11 Chess Olympiad medals and 9 individual medals.  During her visit to the schools, she met the administrators and pupils of the Maarif establishments, played chess with them and taught game tactics to those interested.  The representative of TMF in Georiga, Kayhan Berişler, gave information concerning the school’s activities and offered a gift to Gaprindashvili at the end of the program.
